The HSSC is excited to announce the Spring TOPSoccer Season will begin this March at William G. “Doc” Myers Park in Hobe Sound. TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based soccer program that is designed to meet the needs of children with physical and/or mental disabilities. Player participation and development are key elements of the program and players are placed on teams according to physical and cognitive ability and NOT necessarily by age. TOPSoccer is designed to improve the overall fitness, self-esteem and social skills of the participating athletes. TOPSoccer creates a fun, adaptive environment for players ages 4-21 years old. Programs are geared toward player development rather than composition. Athletes learn skills and have fun.

TOPSoccer, which was developed by US Youth Soccer in 1991, provides young players with disabilities an environment filled with meaningful learning, and developmental and physical participation opportunities through the game of Soccer. “TOPSoccer is similar to mainstream soccer” explains Coach Anthony Sementelli, the Director of TOPSoccer for Hobe Sound Soccer Club, “except that each of the participants are assigned to an able bodied “Buddy” volunteer who serves as their mentor and guardian for the duration of the Program. The most important factor to be considered is the safety of the athletes”. Sementelli further stated, “TOPSoccer is a Program developed specifically around the needs and abilities of the participants. We are not just trying to put a bunch of kids into some Soccer Program.”

Coach Sementelli, along with the Club’s immediate Past President Coach Craig Woll, started the Hobe Sound TOPSoccer Program in the spring of 2010 after watching a demonstration of the Program at a Soccer Convention in Orlando. Both coaches define that TOPS demonstration as a life changer, and as the catalyst for starting a much needed TOPS program locally. “Interest in the Program is at and all time high”, says Sementelli. “There is a tremendous need for meaningful, dependable and safe athletic programs for athletes with special needs. Last year we had 128 athletes register for the Program, and we expect that number to continue to increase as word of the Program continues to permeate the community. With that number of registrations, as many as 150 volunteers are needed to run the Program,” Sementelli concludes.

Hobe Sound TOPSoccer is funded entirely by business donations, grants and monies provided by Hobe Sound Soccer Club and its member families. The Program runs on Friday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the SPRING. For more information about TOPSoccer, please contact Julie Hemsley at (603)  236-6152  email doc.hssc@gmail.com
